Your recent article: “Are we There Yet? Making inroads to decolonise planning knowledge and practices in Southern Ontario.” Fall 2013. 53 (2): 20-23 was rather timely. As a preliminary publishing of the results of this research, it demonstrates the need for a more consistent response from our profession.

The City of Barrie sponsored a World Town Planning Day event this year that explored the use of mid-rise buildings and whether this is the best form of development in urban centres to achieve intensification.

Dan Burden, the renowned Complete Streets advocate, once again graced us with his wisdom and wit early this November. Escaping just ahead of the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, he made it to Ontario in time to be awarded Honourary Membership in OPPI at our World Town Planning Day press conference.

Transition Town Orillia, a local citizen’s group, hosted a Jane Jacobs walk during its monthly meeting May 9. Over 600 walks were held worldwide in 2012 in celebration of the life and work of Toronto urbanist, activist, and author Jane Jacobs.

On the 7th of June 2012, the County of Simcoe hosted a professional development activity concerning the “Duty to Consult” with Aboriginal communities. The Lakeland District of OPPI brought together local Aboriginal representatives and planners in a half-day panel discussion to initiate a dialogue.

The design charette was a wonderful way to begin. Fellow professionals meeting for the first time in an informal manner, yet all working for a common goal. Relaxing, invigorating and brilliant! Our keynote speakers provided an amazing symmetry to the theme by drawing together cultural wisdom, factual problems, political complexity, and inspired design.

The planning issues that face a First Nation are much the same as those found in any small municipality -residential housing, environmental protection, economic development, etc.; however, the traditional relationship between Aboriginal People and the Crown is an ever-present context in which they are dealt with.
